The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

Consider this a dare for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy scary movies: Sit down with your significant other and stream Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its online premiere via Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like typical body horror, but inside Together resides a deep examination about how we choose to love each other.

A Debut Feature Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for over ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a unique chemistry to their roles, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The narrative commences when the couple relocate from the urban environment to the country for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the tropes cease. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim discover an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity begins influencing the couple. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying horror experience, interspersing moments of dreamlike terrors, gross (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes during something grotesque). The director orchestrates these parts expertly and presents them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and far away from his social circle. He fears the concept of completely losing his individual identity in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie never makes one partner or the other the obvious villain.

The couple confront the kind of problems that arise in long-term unions a decade in. Fundamentally, they still love each other. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these anxieties of codependency and totally devoting oneself to another person, the metaphor never feels clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama work together in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. It has been said that single viewers have interpreted the film as a strong argument for remaining unattached. On the other hand, some couples experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could function as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the ending sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply look at your partner and state, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can embark on today.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform now.
