Space Traveler Reveals Mental Health Struggle Following ‘Tsunami of Online Abuse Following Journey

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her emotional downturn after being subjected to a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in the spring, which also carried high-profile passengers.

The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” she recounted in a social media post, describing a phone call from a fellow crew member in the days following the journey.

She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Buried Under Misogyny

Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to female health science and performed experiments during the flight, said everything she had worked for – from her lab work and years of training to the personal milestone of her background – was overshadowed under the avalanche of gendered attacks.

She is best known for her tireless campaigning championing the cause of victims of sexual violence.

Her own goal of reaching space was deferred after being assaulted during her university years, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

The Fog Begins to Lift

Now, eight months after fulfilling her dream, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she thanked the supporters whose kindness were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.

She concluded that even with the backlash, important benefits had emerged from the flight, such as increased focus on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.

The fully automated spacecraft departed its launch site in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a brief suborbital flight that exceeded the Kármán line of space.
