No fewer than thirteen passengers perish and ninety-eight injured in rail accident in Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major public works projects.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the reasons behind this tragedy,” declared the head of state.

The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose term finished the previous year. This venture was intimately linked to his administration's economic goals for the southern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The development of both railway systems was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in public projects. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, defying predictions to be partially opened before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked ongoing concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party called for an immediate suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.

This halt was requested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."

In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been running in total accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and running of these national initiatives.
