France will start stopping small boats in Channel after British demands
France has agreed to begin stopping migrant vessels in the Channel, after an extended period of pressure from the United Kingdom.
This policy shift comes after the British leader sent a letter to the French leader asking him to back the initiative and saying there currently "have no effective deterrent" in the Channel.
French maritime police have been authorized to stop the migrant vessels at sea, but exclusively prior to they've picked up their passengers, according to authoritative statements.
French police have rarely intervened to stop the heavily loaded boats leaving the coastline because it is considered excessively high a risk to both officers and civilians.
"It is crucial that we implement these tactics this month... We have no effective prevention in the Channel."
Currently, a French maritime police spokesperson says personnel will start taking action at sea, with the aim of protecting lives.
Significantly, the official excluded the use of nets to intercept boats, which had earlier been suggested as a possible technique to snarl the engines of the boats.
The decision to intervene at all is a major advancement, coming after a brief change towards a more aggressive strategy this warmer season, which ceased when the former Interior Minister left government.
That was highlighted in the summer month, preceding a summit between the Prime Minister and French president, when authorities were witnessed wading into the sea to damage the hulls of a vessel.
Currently French authorities will once more be allowed to intercept boats before they collect migrant individuals from the beaches of France's north coast, although it's uncertain how the vessels will be stopped.
Strong winds are presently postponing the commencement of intervention operations and the human trafficking networks will be looking for ways to adjust to evade interception, as they have frequently done in the past.
The Home Office and the Prime Minister's office have been contacted for comment.
